E-mail Account Set-up in Microsoft® Outlook Express

Things to keep in mind while setting up an e-mail account in Outlook Express

Outlook Express is an e-mail and news client included with Internet Explorer versions 4.0 to 6.0. It is also made available by Microsoft on all the Windows versions. This application is free to use and comes with all the essential tools that enable writing, sending, receiving, and even storing e-mails. Outlook Express is easy to use and hassle free, and has lots of very useful features. Some of the features that come along with Outlook Express are Calendar, Task Manager, RSS News Feed, security and privacy features, etc.

A few things that you should know before using Outlook Express:

  • Setting up an e-mail account
  • Using spell-check
  • Stopping junk e-mails

Setting up an e-mail account

Setting up an e-mail account in Outlook Express is quick and easy, facilitated by the Internet Connection Wizard, which walks you through all the steps for completing the task. Before initiating the e-mail set-up, you should be aware of your account name and password. Once that is done, start the Outlook Express, click the ‘Accounts’ tab which you will find under the ‘Tools’ menu. The action will initiate the Internet Wizard. Type in your username in the ‘Your Name’ section of the application, and then click ‘Next’. Now, on the browser’s address page, key in your e-mail address, and again click ‘Next’. Keep following the on-screen instructions to finish setting the account.

Using spell-check

Since, Outlook Express is mostly used for professional purposes, avoiding spelling mistakes becomes a very important task. Outlook Express has a spell-check program which either automatically checks for errors. You can also manually check the errors by customizing the program. To do so, you need to click on the ‘Tools’ menu and then click ‘Options’ from the drop-down menu. Click on the ‘Spelling’ tab in the window and select ‘Always check spelling before sending’. As for the manual check, after you have written down a message in the mail body, go to ‘Tools’ and again click ‘Spelling’. The program will then show the spelling errors.

Stopping junk e-mails

Although, the mail application has an automatic junk filter to stop all the unnecessary messages, you can still adjust the levels, if he or she finds that several junk e-mails are still passing through the filter. For that, click on the ‘Microsoft Outlook’ icon under the ‘Start’ menu. Go to the ‘Actions’ menu and increase the size of the ‘Junk E-mail’ submenu. Then, click the ‘Junk E-mail Options’ from the submenu and select the ‘Radio’ button, which is placed next to the level of the junk e-mail filter, and select ‘High’. All the unnecessary e-mails will now be automatically filtered out and will not appear in your Inbox.
