Recently, it has made some predictions about cloud e-mail services based on the wide ranging research done by its analysts. Gartner highlighted several aspects about the cloud e-mail services.
Gartner has pushed out its expectation of 10 percent market share milestone that cloud e-mail is making from next year until 2014. It is so because its uptake has been slower than what Gartner had predicted. Gartner believes that customers are waiting for the prices to fall down. According to analyst Tom Austin, “ Cloud-based collaboration services appear to be forward priced and, while we do expect the cost of Cloud E-mail and Collaboration Services (CECS) to follow a cost-learning curve, the motive for much of the investment in CECS appears to be cost reduction." So, CECS suppliers have to go forward with a plan to reduce the price because prices in general have been reduced in the market.
Another factor that is causing such a slow uptake is due to the recently installed e-mail systems that have not reached their expiration date. Due to regulatory scrutiny for senior officers, organizations typically don’t prefer cloud-based systems as they tend to retain a small, core in-house system. And even if cloud e-mail reaches its tipping point and uptake takes place in an accelerated pace, Gartner still predicts that the growth will be slow in 2020 when the market share is expected to exceed 55 percent.
This advice might help the two largest providers of cloud services - Google and Microsoft. Both are locked up in major enterprise deployments across several U.S. government agencies. So, let us hope that both of them take Gartner's suggestions seriously so that cloud e-mail services can come at a cost-efficient price and everybody can enjoy them.
