Customize E-mail Settings in Microsoft® Outlook Express
Configure the e-mail settings in Outlook Express according to your needs
There are two ways to send and get e-mail messages: either with an e-mail application or with a web-based application by using an Internet browser. All web-based solutions are quite straightforward and very simple to use, and are available wherever you decide to log on because your mails are stored on the server of the e-mail browser. With an e-mail application, it is possible for you to send and receive e-mails stored on your computer. This is why you need an e-mail application like Windows Live Mail, Microsoft® Outlook®, or Outlook® Express.
Here are a few points that can help you to configure Outlook Express :
- E-mail settings in Outlook® Express
- Disabling mail preview
- Not able to save the password
E-mail settings in Outlook Express
Setting up Outlook Express is not hard. You have probably received the settings, like e-mail address, POP3 and SMTP servers, user account, and password from your e-mail provider. In Outlook Express, you need to click ‘Tools’, ‘Accounts’, ‘Add’, and then ‘E-mail’ to open the account set-up wizard. When the wizard opens, first enter your name, followed by your e-mail address. If your e-mail id is incorrect, nobody will be able to reply to your e-mail. This is, therefore, a very important step. On the next screen that appears, you have to enter the POP3 and SMTP servers (provided by your provider). The POP3 server is the incoming mail server of the e-mail provider, while the SMTP server is the outgoing mail server the e-mail provider. Most of the time, you have to use the SMTP server of your Internet provider, which is probably the same as your e-mail provider. The last screen of the wizard is used to enter the username and password provided by your e-mail provider.
Disabling mail preview
It is always good to see the preview of a mail, but considering all precautions, this is not a wise setting. This setting makes your system vulnerable to attacks from outside threats, like spam, worms, and viruses that can come in the guise of e-mails. The person or system sending the spam will know for sure that you are a regular e-mail reader and will send you more and more spam. Disabling this option has been made easy for exactly this purpose. Select your inbox, click ‘View’ in the Toolbar, and go to ‘Layout’ and disable ‘Show Preview Pane’. Disable the preview pane of the deleted items as well.
Sometimes, Outlook Express does not save your passwords, even if the option to save passwords is turned on. This error is usually caused by the malfunctioning of the protected storage space for Windows®. To resolve this issue, run the Registry Editor and navigate to the key, ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftProtected Storage System Provider’. You will find a key with a long name starting with S-1-5-21 which you have to delete. It would be wise to create a backup of this file by going to 'File' and choosing the 'Export' option. The problem will be solved and your password will be saved.
