Fix 'Unable to Receive Mails' Issue with Microsoft® Outlook Express
Do you know how to fix 'unable to receive mails' issue with Outlook Express?
To set-up a new e-mail account in Outlook Explorer, you may take easy at first, but often you will come across problems in sending e-mail or sometimes, you may not be able to receive e-mail. This can cause a lot of frustration, but there is nothing to worry. There are numerous reasons for not being able to receive e-mails through Outlook (Express). These reasons include (but are not limited to), temporary mail server problems, wrong Outlook Express settings, incorrect MX records of the domain, exceeded space quota of the e-mail account, etc. The first thing, you will have to ensure is whether you have the correct e-mail username, password and incoming mail server address set-up in the Outlook Express Set-up. This information should have been given to you from your hosting company.
Here are some checks you can make in order to locate the reason why you cannot receive e-mail with your Outlook:
- Check mail server connectivity
- Common mistake in e-mail ID
- Check e-mail quota
Check mail server connectivity
The standard server ports generally used for receiving e-mails through POP3 or IMAP protocols are port 110 and port 143 respectively. If you have troubles receiving e-mails, it is recommended to perform a telnet check of the connection between your computer and the appropriate port depending on the email protocol your Outlook is set to use for receiving emails. If the connection test shows server side crises, you would have been already been notified by our automatic monitoring system and the problem will be most probably fixed within the next few minutes. If the test shows no problems with the connection, you should inspect for other reasons.
Common mistake in e-mail ID
Always double check your Incoming Mail (POP3) settings because there are chances for common mistakes in servers setting (Servers tab). In the account name, confirm that you use the full e-mail address and not just the first part of the e-mail address. For example: email@example.com and not just "janedoe". Then login to your Web Mail and delete all suspicious e-mails that can block your Mailbox because e-mails that have no 'From' or corrupted spam e-mails can cause Outlook/Outlook Express to hang.
If you have exceeded the quota of your e-mail account, you will not be able to receive any e-mail messages. In that case, you should either remove some of the old messages or increase the space quota of your e-mail account. You can check each account's disk usage from cPanel. Then choose 'E-mail Accounts' and click 'Current Accounts' section. In the table, there will be a column called Usage which gives information about the space usage of each mail account. In order to change the quota of an account, click on 'cPanel' then 'E-mail Accounts' and choose 'Current Accounts' to get functions column and then click 'Change quota'.
