Clear Microsoft® Outlook auto complete cache
Learn about the steps to be followed to clear the auto complete cache in Microsoft Outlook
The auto complete function in Microsoft Outlook uses cache for the various e-mail addresses on the user account. The application will store the data as nick name lists. These lists are created automatically while the people use the application. The file will be stored as a hidden message in the mailbox. The option for resetting the cache arises when the user experiences any issues with the cache like any corruptions upon the nick name file. In such case the user can reset the auto complete cache upon the application. For that open the Microsoft Outlook application and select file option from the top menu. Then choose options from the drop down list and choose mail tab from the options window. Under the send messages and near to the 'Use Auto-Complete List' to suggest names when typing in the To, Cc, and Bcc lines check box, the user can find the button to clear the auto complete list. Click on the option and confirm the action by clicking 'Yes' option in the prompt window. Now the auto complete cache is cleared and thus reset. The cache will again start storing the data when the user runs the application.
Discussed below are the methods to reset the nick names for auto completion caches in Microsoft Outlook:
- Reset the nick names caches individually
- Reset the cache from the Microsoft Outlook application
- Reset the cache through 'Run' command
Reset the nick names caches individually
The nick names of the auto complete caches can be reset by deleting the existing ones one by one. Open a new e-mail message in the Microsoft Outlook application window and type the first few letters of the nickname cache entry that the user wants to delete. While the suggestions appear, highlight the nick name entry using the arrow keys and delete the entry either by pressing the delete key or by clicking on the x mark near to the entry for deleting the name. Thus the user can reset the nick names for the auto complete cache individually.
Reset the cache from the Microsoft Outlook application
The reset of the nick names for the auto complete feature can also be done from the Microsoft Outlook application itself. The application stores the cache in .NK2 file in Microsoft Outlook program. The file will be hidden at the parent folder. Open the Outlook folder that contains the .NK2 file. Then right click on the file and select rename option. Rename the file as x.bak and close the window. Now the Outlook cache for auto complete nick names resets.
Start the 'Run' option from the 'Start' menu and type the following command at the text area; path of the Outlook application/CleanAutoCompleteCache. If Outlook is installed at the default location at the system, then the user only needs to type Outlook.exe at the path name. Click 'Enter' key and as a result the Outlook application will launch upon the system using the above switch. This will reset the nick names for the auto complete cache.
