Configuring the alert settings
You can use the desktop alerts in two ways. The easiest way is to click on 'Desktop alert settings' from alert’s menu. The other way is to browse through Outlook’s main Windows. For this, you need to click on 'Options' in Tools menu. Then you can find a dialog box on preference tab of the dialog box. You need to click on 'E-mail options' button. In the corresponding e-mail box, click on 'Advanced e-mail option' and then click on 'Desktop Alert settings' option to configure the settings.
Enabling/Disabling the alerts
To enable or disable the alerts, you just need to check or uncheck 'Display new mail desktop alert' checkbox. To do so, initially click on 'E-mail options' button in options of Tools menu. Now you need to click on 'Advanced e-mail option' button, then you can find a dialog box. In the dialogue box, check 'Display new mail desktop alert' checkbox to enable alerts and uncheck to disable the alert.
With alert settings, you can set the alert display as per your comfort. The default time for which the alert display stays on your screen is seven seconds. This time is fairly reasonable, even then Outlook provides you facility to change the time settings from three to 30 seconds. You can even set transparency of the alert dialog box as per your convenience. By default, 20% transparency is considered to be perfect balance.
