How to change Security Settings in Microsoft® Outlook® 2007
Microsoft Outlook 2007 provides high level security to the users. Since viruses can enter the system via e-mail attachments, Microsoft Outlook 2007 prevents the opening of such attachments that it suspects to be a threat. You can easily enable the attachments by changing the e-mail security settings. To open such an e-mail attachment, first click on the ‘Tools’ option. Then, uncheck ‘Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus'. Then to confirm, click the ‘OK’ button. Sometimes, the settings option will not work in Microsoft Outlook 2007. The security settings might also prevent you from opening the links in e-mail attachments. Sometimes, you cannot send e-mail messages to others.
In the following points, we discuss how to enable security settings in Microsoft Outlook 2007:
- Enable digital ID
- Enable ActiveX controls
- Enable the settings to unblock unsafe attachments
Enable digital ID
Spammers can send e-mail messages that appear to come from some other persons or people in your contacts list. In this case, you can make use of digital signature. For creating a digital ID, first click on the ‘Tools’ button and open ‘Trust Center’. In the window that opens, click on ‘Words E-mail Security’. Then, click on the ‘Get a digital ID’ labeled button. A website will open. You have to fill out the forms provided on the website. Then, choose a password to enable your digital ID.
Enable ActiveX Controls
If security warnings appear, you can enable ActiveX controls for the current section. For enabling ActiveX controls, first click on ‘Options’ in the 'Security Warnings' message bar. Then, the 'Security Options' dialog box will appear. Now, select ‘Enable this content’. The content will be enabled for the current section. In Microsoft Outlook 2007, security alerts will appear in dialog boxes. You can place the document in a trusted location if you don’t wish to receive the security alerts again.
Enable the Settings to Unblock Unsafe Attachments
Sometimes, you may get e-mail messages with unsafe attachments. To enable the settings to prevent Microsoft Outlook 2007 from blocking such unsafe attachments, first choose the Microsoft Office 2007 administrative templates. Then, add the local policy snap-in form. Then, select ‘User Configuration’ and click on ‘Administrative Templates’. Right-click and add the new Microsoft Office 2007 administrative templates. Select ‘Classic Administrative Templates' and open ‘Microsoft Office Outlook 2007’. From here, select ‘Security’ to open ‘Security Form Settings’. Then, select ‘Attachment Security’. This will enable the settings in Microsoft Outlook 2007 to prevent unsafe attachments from being blocked.
