Open Thunderbird, if it is opened for the first time, a Windows will be seen from which e-mail account is selected. Now click 'Continue'. If it is not opened for the first time, select 'Tools' menu and from that 'Account settings' should be selected. Then personalize Thunderbird. After filling each block, click 'Next'. Then an 'Account Assistant' dialog box will be opened from which incoming server type is selected. Select either POP or IMAP as the server type. Now select 'Next' button at the bottom left of 'Account Assistant' tab. Then 'Incoming Mail' dialog box is opened where the incoming user name field and outgoing user name field are filled. Save server settings and configure the details to provider. Now click 'Next' button. In the username dialog box, type username or e-mail address that the provider has given you. Go to next menu to verify your account details and click 'Finish' button.
Server Settings in Thunderbird defines how it interacts with the mail server. Thus, it set e-mail account setting after the initial set-up. Enable 'Leave a copy of message' in the server for getting e-mail every time you log on. It is advised to compact your folders periodically. For compacting manually, remove the check mark Disk space. Also change the delay at which Thunderbird for new messages by selecting 'check for new messages every' in server settings of account settings in tools bar of Thunderbird. Another thing to be noted is that the disk cache can be increased by simply incrementing the value in Disk Space section and tune your Thunderbird finely using config editor for better result.
