Fix Mozilla® Thunderbird® Slow Start up Issue
Mozilla Thunderbird is a fully featured and secure e-mail client. It allows the user to handle mails efficiently and with style. It also filters junk mails by detecting scam messages. The facility of mail-views, free-form message tags and flexible filters allows the user to organize and prioritize mails easily. Searches can be saved to virtual folders which automatically aggregate relevant mail in Thunderbird. Mozilla Thunderbird offers a pretty and streamlined interface in a very powerful e-mail package. However, sometimes users might experience slow down or hang up issues when using the desktop e-mail client. By using the e-mail client frequently, there is a high chance that the Mail Summary Files (.msf) have become corrupted or contains garbage. This can slow down the performance of Thunderbird considerably.
The following are the techniques to fix these issues:
- Delete the .msf files in the Thunderbird Profile Folder
- Thunderbird tools
- Create New Archive Folders
Delete the .msf files in the Thunderbird Profile Folder
Thunderbird uses extension files called .msf to store index of the received e-mails without the complete message. Over time these files may get corrupted and lead to slow start up. The best way to fix this issue is to delete these .msf files in the Thunderbird Profile folder after closing the Thunderbird e-mail client. Thunderbird will automatically rebuild the indexes on its next start up fixing any problems that were caused by these files. It is recommended to back up the Thunderbird profile folder before deleting any files within.
Another way to speed up the start up of the Thunderbird is to run a tool which eliminates most of the hassles associated with the process. It will display a list of Thunderbird profiles that it found on the computer system after the execution. All it takes to delete all .msf files associated with profile is to select the profile and click on the 'Fix Profile' link.
Create New Archive Folders
The third way to fix the slow start up of Thunderbird is to create archive folders. Locate the Archive folder in the mail directory when the Thunderbird is closed to move the contents of the folder to some other location outside of the Thunderbird folder. The user can create two archive folders namely 'Archive Sent' and 'Archive Received'. From within the Thunderbird the user can move the old content into those two folders. The process would be to move the content back when the user needs to access the old files. This can help in speeding up the start up of Thunderbird.
