Windows® Mail In Windows® Vista
Learn about Windows Mail in Windows Vista
Windows Vista is a powerful and graphically rich operating system. Windows Mail is an e-mail and newsgroup client which is included in Windows Vista. It uses the Internet protocol, IPv6. Instead of storing e-mail messages in a single database file, it is stored in the individual files. It has many added features, like Bayesian junk-mail filtering, top-level domain, and encoding blocking. Windows Mail supports POP3 and IMAP E-mail accounts. It might not support HTTP server used by Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, and AOL. If you add Hotmail or MSN accounts to Windows Mail, you might face some problems. One solution to these problems is to use Windows Live Mail instead of Windows Mail. The main advantage of using Windows Live Mail instead of Windows Mail without an Internet connection is that you can access, read, and compose e-mail messages with it. Windows Live Mail always works with Hotmail, AOL, and Yahoo! Mail, among others. Backing up and restoring of the data in Windows Mail is done to ensure that you don’t lose the files that you have created, modified, and stored on your computer.
You need to follow some guidelines for backing up and restoring the data in Windows Mail. These include :
- Backing up e-mails
- Restoring e-mails
- Using ‘Default Programs’ to restore e-mails
Backing up e-mails
Backing up your data ensures that no data is lost in case of hardware failure, virus infections, or other errors. To prevent data loss, you need to store the data on a separate machine or a removable media. To back up e-mails, you need to open Windows Mail. From ‘Tools’, select ‘Options’, and then click the ‘Advanced’ tab. Click the ‘Maintenance’ button and click ‘Store Folder’ to select and copy the folder location. The ‘Store Location’ dialog box lists your personal message storage folder, which is the default location that Windows Mail® currently stores your e-mails to. Then, close Windows Mail®. From the Windows Vista® desktop you need to open the ‘Run’ dialog box by typing ‘Run’ in the ‘Start’ search field. Then, you can paste the file path by clicking the ‘CTRL’+ ‘V’ keys together. From the ‘Organize’ menu, you need to click ‘Select All’ and then copy the files to a folder named ‘Mail Backup’ that you create on the desktop. Finally, close the ‘Mail Backup’ window.
Restoring Windows Mail will help you in getting back all your personal and important e-mails. To restore the backed up e-mails of Windows Mail®, you need to select the ‘Accounts’ option from the ‘Tools’ menu. From the PO mailbox, click the ‘Import’ option and locate the ‘Mail Backup’ folder on your storage drive. Select the e-mail account that you need to import and repeat these steps for each e-mail account that you need to import. Finally, press the ‘Close’ button. Thus, you will be able to restore all your e-mail accounts.
For restoring through default programs, you need to open ‘Control Panel’, click ‘Default Programs’, and then click the ‘Set Program Access and Computer Defaults’ link. You will then receive a ‘User Account Control’ prompt to click ‘Continue’. Then, select ‘Custom’ and choose a default e-mail program form the drop-down menu. To restore Windows Mail, from the ‘Set Default Programs List’ you need to check the option, ‘Enable access to this program’, and then click ‘OK’. Restoring of Windows Mail is thus done with this step.
